Start your journey with a visit to Sepilok – view a feeding at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, visit the Sun Bear Conservation Center, and stroll the canopy walk at the Rainforest Discovery Center. Stay at Borneo Nature Lodge, an eco-friendly accommodation nestled along the banks of the Kinabatangan River. Spend your days cruising down the river in search of wildlife, explore the inner chambers of Gomantong Cave. Bird enthusiasts can post up at the lodge’s three-story viewing tower, which doubles as a vantage point and solar energy tower – on the ground level, there are mechanical bicycle pedals where visitors can cycle to charge up the lodge’s battery banks, as the lodge runs on stored solar power at night.

At Danum Valley Field Center, your days will consist of early morning nature and wildlife observations, short hikes surrounding the field center, longer walks for those with a high fitness level, and siesta time by the river during the hot afternoon. Go on night walks to find nocturnal creatures, add additional 4×4 activities such as the night safari and morning sunrise tour. You will get a chance to experience the ancient, 130 million-year-old Borneo rainforest by discovering a plethora of biodiversity.

Responsible Traveler

Be aware that you will be in a reserved area and a sensitive environment. Consider your actions:

  • Cut out plastic – remove and recycle plastic packaging before coming into the area
  • Bring rechargeable batteries as disposable batteries leach toxic chemicals as they degrade in a landfill, and recycling facilities are scarce in areas like the Malaysian Borneo
  • Bring your own metal water bottle – you can fill up at the eating area instead of purchasing bottled water
  • If you smoke, never throw your cigarette butts on the ground or in the forest – dispose of them in ashtrays or bins.
  • During outdoor and nature activities, take your cues from the expert local guides. Follow their instructions when observing wildlife. Be aware that you may need to take extra care in these areas to respect the natural environment.
