3D2N KINABALU PARK CAMPING

Camping at the base of Kinabalu Mountain explores Sayap Substation – a little used ranger outpost on the perimeter of Kinabalu National Park – surrounded by vast jungles in a temperate climate, with an abundance of biodiversity. Located at 1,080 meters above sea level, the primary rainforest is filled with orchids, giant trees, and waterfalls. The campsite sits along a beautiful mountain river, with western toilets and showers.

Accommodation

You will be sleeping in tents provided with sleeping mat and sleeping bags.

Food

Communal eating – vegetarians and special diets catered for. Your guide will be cooking simple meals.

Guides

You will be accompanied by a knowledgeable Sticky Rice Travel nature guide. Our group size for Sayap Camping is 1:6 guide to guests ratio. 

We can also accommodate private guide or specialist guide eg. Birding guide requests.

Day 1

Depart from Kota Kinabalu at 9:00 AM for a 3 hours drive to the Kinabalu Park substation. We will set up camp and then eat lunch, before departing on a trek to Kemantis Waterfall. Take a splash in the cool, refreshing water that is coming from Mt. Kinabalu. We will return to camp for dinner, before heading out on a night walk to search for reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.

Day 2

Today, we will start with a morning of birding and then explore the trails around Sayap. Follow stunning mountain rivers and discover the unique flora and fauna of the Kinabalu Mountain region. Return for lunch and spend the afternoon on short walks, or relaxing by the river. After dinner, we will head out for night walk.

Day 3

Take an early morning birding walk, return for breakfast and return to Kota Kinabalu. Arrive by 12:00 PM.

What to Bring?

Comfortable hiking backpack, head lamp, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, hat, your favorite trekking snacks, raincoat, sunglasses, binocular, leech socks, dry-bag, swimwear, good walking/trekking shoes, personal toiletries including towel, personal medication and basic first aid kit, light clothing for trekking. 

*Warm clothes are very important for this destination as it is cold in the evening because we camp around 1,000 meters above sea level.

Recommended for

Couples, families, and other travellers keen on camping in nature, hiking and waterfall. Please note from a wildlife perspective Sayap is great for birding (especially if you are looking for some of Borneo’s endemics), reptiles, amphibians, landscapes and waterfalls, but not a trip that is focused on mammals.
